Individual Therapy
I provide short-term, intensive, experiential therapy individuals seeking to liberate themselves from painful cycles within their relationships and within themselves so that they can be more free to respond skillfully and authentically to whatever arises— personally and globally.
People I work with often come to therapy because they’re depressed, anxious, “stuck,” self critical, trapped in cycles of obsessive thinking, dealing with a history of relational trauma, experiencing problems in current or past relationships, or they’re acting in destructive ways that bewilder them.
We may do great work together if:
You want to work through blocks, barriers, and/or problematic behaviors so you can do what matters most to you with more energy, focus, clarity, authenticity, and flexibility.
You want to go beyond the superficial and intellectual, into the depths of the present moment to face head-on what is true but has been avoided. You have a sense that what we hide from ourselves ends up running the show outside our awareness.
Traditional, supportive talk therapy hasn’t been effective, and/or you are drawn to work that challenges you in new ways.
You need to work with someone who can keep up with your intensity, including feelings that come up in/about the therapy relationship and process.
You feel like you don’t meet this profile perfectly, but nonetheless feel drawn to work together (I’m not so into gatekeeping).
What is intensive short term experiential therapy?
I ground my therapy work in Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy. ISTDP is a flexible method of bringing deep authenticity into the therapy relationship and, as a result, into one’s life. We orient toward the root of the problems you’re facing, and work together to face them directly. We may focus on emotions, somatic (body-based) experiences, and uncovering layers of unconscious dynamics as they show up in the here-and-now. This work can be quite challenging and intense, but also has great transformational potential.
What are the logistical details?
I offer a nontraditional, time-limited therapy format. The first “trial” session lasts two hours and offers us a chance to see together whether an intensive form of therapy is appropriate for you and your goals. From there, we can make an agreement to meet for 12-16 hours of additional therapy at a pace and session length that feels appropriate and accessible. Longer blocks of therapy (3-4 hours for multiple days in a row) are possible for people traveling from out of town.
I see individuals at my office in Asheville, NC, or anywhere in North Carolina, South Carolina, or Florida via telehealth. I’m a clinical mental health counselor licensed to provide therapy in those states.
My fee is $115 per hour with a commitment to a 12-16 hour course of therapy. In order to make this work accessible, I am able to offer a limited number of discounted “sliding scale” spaces in my schedule. Just ask.
You’re a Zen person— do you do spiritual or religious counseling?
My years of intensive, inquiry-based, nondual-oriented meditation profoundly inform my work. Each therapy hour can be a dynamic, shared exploration of reality in the here-and-now— a kind of relational meditation. I generally do not bring religion into sessions, but I believe the focus and discipline of this training has a profound impact on my way of being with people, as does the Buddhist worldview that people are essentially whole, wise, and compassionate.
